Say Hello to Smarter Search: Google AI Mode Now Live in the UK

Published by NewsPR Today | July 2025

Imagine you could ask Google a messy, complicated question—the kind that rambles on in your head—and get back an answer that understands what you’re after.

That’s the promise of AI Mode, Google’s powerful new search experience, which is beginning to roll out across the United Kingdom today.

This isn’t just a tweak to the old search bar. You’ll find AI Mode as a new tab on your search results page or featured prominently in the Google app on both Android and iOS. It’s designed to be an intuitive way to get comprehensive information, helping you dig deeper into any topic with follow-up questions and helpful links to web content.

Tackling Your Most Complex Questions

At its core, AI Mode is built to handle the kind of nuanced queries that used to require a dozen different searches. Powered by a custom version of Google’s latest Gemini 2.5 model, it’s especially useful when you’re exploring a new idea, planning a trip, or trying to compare different products. Google has found that early users are already asking questions that are two or three times longer than their typical search terms.

Google Search: Introducing AI Mode in the UK

For example, instead of just searching for “pubs in Edinburgh,” you can now ask something far more specific, like “Things to do in Edinburgh this weekend with friends. We’re big foodies who like music but also chill vibes and exploring off the beaten track.” Similarly, you can dive into complex topics by asking, “How do migrating birds know where to go?”

Behind the scenes, the system uses a technique called “query fan-out.” It breaks your big question down into smaller subtopics and runs multiple searches at once on your behalf. This allows it to dive deeper into the web than a standard search, uncovering highly relevant content that perfectly matches your request.

More Ways to Ask

Recognizing that we don’t always think in text, AI Mode is designed to be truly multimodal. You can ask your questions in whatever way feels most natural. Tap the microphone icon to ask your query out loud, or use your phone’s camera to snap a photo or upload an image and ask a question about it directly.

A New Path to the Web’s Best Content

While the AI delivers a comprehensive response, Google emphasizes that its mission to help people discover content from across the web remains central. AI Mode will feature prominent links for you to click on, and by allowing for more detailed questions, Google believes it will open up new ways for users to find unique content.

Citing results from its similar AI Overviews feature, Google notes that users have been visiting a greater diversity of websites when asking complex questions. The company also states that these clicks are of “higher quality,” meaning the users who click through are more likely to spend more time on the sites they visit.

Google is quick to point out that this is still an early-stage product. The system is rooted in Google’s core ranking and quality systems, but they acknowledge that it won’t always get things right. If the AI doesn’t have high confidence in its answer, it will simply show a standard set of web search results. As the technology is brand new, Google is committed to continuous improvement and is encouraging users in the UK to try AI Mode today and share their thoughts.
