On Tuesday, Anthropic, a US-based AI startup, announced that it will make its AI platform, Claude for Government and Claude for Enterprise, available to all three branches of the US government – the executive, legislative, and judicial – for just $1 per agency.
This comes as major AI companies are stepping up efforts to build closer relationships with government departments and regulators, competing to win important government contracts.
OpenAI, one of Anthropic’s main rivals, recently made a similar offer, providing its ChatGPT Enterprise solution to US federal agencies for $1 per agency for the next year.
Anthropic has teamed up with the US General Services Administration to make its AI tools available across government departments. The company is also offering technical help to ensure smooth adoption.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said, “Our government institutions must have access to the most capable and secure AI tools if the US wants to stay a leader in AI.”
The competition for government contracts in the AI space is heating up. In June, Anthropic launched Claude Gov models specially designed for national security clients. Soon after, the US Department of Defence announced contracts worth up to $200 million for AI development with Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and Elon Musk’s xAI.
On the same day, Elon Musk’s xAI introduced Grok for Government, a set of AI products for US government use.
OpenAI also launched OpenAI for Government in June and plans to open its first office in Washington, D.C. early next year.
This rush to serve government clients shows how important AI has become in national security, policy, and governance. India and other countries are watching closely as they develop their own AI plans.
